I’m sure you’ve all seen this image circulating pinterest:

Mary Jeans Things Paper Vase

This is actually a vase available on Etsy; created using rolled paper by Mary Jeans Thingsย and today I’m going to be showing you how to DIY your own using a similar concept!

For this DIY you will need:

  • Magazines
  • Hot Glue Gun
  • Sellotape
  • Cardboard*
  • Paper Sealer*
  • Scissors*
  • Paint Brush*
  • Skewer*

(All items with a * next to them are optional)

Before you start plug your glue gun in to heat up.

First take you magazine and tear several pages out so you have a pile – it is best to choose brightly coloured ones as mine turned out looking a bit dull. (Advert pages work especially well.) Then take one of the pages and fold it in a concertina so that it becomes a long thin strip.

Now roll this into a ball and secure it with sellotape.

Continue folding, rolling and securing pages until you have a large pile of these. You can stick something small and round in the middle, such as a skewer, and push out to create a nice circular shape. After completing this I realised to make them more sturdy you can cut out a circle of cardboard and stick it on the back, it is also a good idea to glaze them with paper sealer if you have any.

Now take one of your rolls and glue a long strip across the side, then the side of another roll to it. Continue doing this to build up your design – making sure to think about placement carefully so you get the desired shape. You may need someone to help you hold it steady and can make it as tall or short as you like!

Leave it to dry overnight just to make sure. If you would like it to have a bottom you can measure and cut out another circle of cardboard or use more rolls of paper and glue them in the same way. Voila!

I recommend placing fake flowers in your vase or if you don’t have any like me you can use it to store craft supplies such as craft knives and pencils.
